What type of wood is best for benches and cabinets for television sets? Also, how much for such wood?
By
I’m doing a scale model of a TV news set for a class. Part of the requirement is to find out what materials are needed and how much the whole thing costs.
In my set there are benches and cabinets for TV sets, because it is a kids’ news show.
In most of the cases, lumber is a good options. However you can also give a chance to other woods if you like. For rough use, composite wood is a good option as it is made up of several recycled material and it doesn’t require additional requirements.
For your convenience, I’ve found a link. Check it out and see how it can help you out.

You have many options depending on your goal of the finished product. You can either paint or stain/poly your cabinets and benches. Either way you should figure out the required sq. ft. of wood required to do your project. Once you have this number add 10-15% for waste.
If you are looking to paint the finished product you could use almost any wood product other than the really cheap plywoods that don’t have a finished (smoothed) side. This would include MDF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium-density_fiberboard) would require a substructure to hold weight. A 4′x8′ sheet of MDF runs about $20-28 dollars ($0.60-$0.85 a sq. ft.)
If you wanted to stain/poly the finished products you could use engineer wood or solid wood. Engineered wood includes cabinet grade plywoods such as oak and birch. These come in 4×8 sheets starting at about $35 (aprox $1.09 sq. ft.) a sheet and require some additional work to get the edges to match using a little bit of solid wood usually available at the lumber yard. Solid wood is also available such as solid oak, brich, pine… many options but the prices go up considerably over plywood and mdf from $2.00 a sq. ft. up.
So quick numbers..
MDF Painted $0.60-$0.85 a sq. ft.
Plywood Stained $1.09 a sq. ft.
Solid Wood Stained $2.00 + a sq ft.
This doesn’t include finishing such as paint or stain/poly, screws, glue.. which would probably add 20 plus dollars depending on how large these items are…
I hope this helps
